Getting Started: Setup

A continuation of the first segment of four introductory tutorials on getting started with BearFlix. Detailed information about BearFlix can be found in the User Guide starting with the Using BearFlix section.

How to set up BearFlix on your computer

Now that BearFlix is installed, a basic setup is necessary in order to begin downloading and sharing files. Please note that this is only a basic setup. Advanced fine-tuning for your particular system can be done via the Setup Menu in BearFlix.

So, after clicking 'Yes' to run BearFlix for the first time you will see the Setup Wizard welcome screen...

Click "Next" to proceed...

The above options are the default configuration for BearFlix. You can make changes to them now, or do it later with the Setup Menu in BearFlix.

Click 'Next' to continue...

The above options allow for search results filtering. Enabling "family filter' will filter out content which is not suitable for the whole family. Please note that filtering is not perfect and from time to time files that are not suitable for the whole family will go through the filters and presneted to the users. You can also choose to set a password to limit access to BearFlix. Further filtering can be defined as a list of keywords - files that match these keywords will be filtered out.

In most cases the defaults for this setup do not need to be changed and you can simply hit "Next' to move to the next screen.

Choose your internet connection speed by clicking one of the radio buttons. Be aware that this does not allow you to choose which connection speed you want to have, it is the speed at which you are currently running; the one regulated by your ISP.

If you are not sure about your connection, chances are BearFlix has detected it and has already chosen it for you, indicated by the dot inside one of the radio buttons.

Now let's go to the next step...

Here is where you indicate where files will go when you download them. The default directories are already entered for you, but you can change them by clicking 'Browse' and navigating to a new location for your downloads.

Next...

Here is where you can choose which folders you would like to add to the BearFlix Library.

It works very much like Windows Explorer. Clicking a plus sign will expand the folder tree, clicking a minus sign will collapse it. You will be able to view all the folders on your hard drive(s) from here, and mark one or more folders for sharing by putting a check in the boxes beside them.

For added security, and to prevent accidental sharing of system files (those that NO ONE should ever have access to), BearFlix has put a padlock on certain folders so they'll never be shared. This is for your protection, and is not an attempt to control your sharing preferences.

Now click 'Next' one more time! ...

This is the final setup screen. It confirms a successful setup, and all you need to do is click the 'Finish' button...

The last screen before BearFlix connects to the Gnutella network.

Click the 'OK' button, and BearFlix will automatically try connecting to the gnutella Network. To know if a connection has been successfully made, read the getting connected tutorial on the next page.
