Browse Hosts

This popular feature allows you to view all the shared files of other users so you can find out if they have anything else you would like, and to download directly from them.

To Know Which Hosts Are Browse Capable you must first activate the Browse column, which is hidden by default, in the Search window. To unhide it, you can:
1) Click on the 'Results' button, and choose from the menu (see image on the left ), or...
2) Right-click any column header, and choose Browse from the menu.

This will add the 'Browse' column to your Search window, which tells you at a glance whether a host is browse enabled or not. If not, there will be nothing displayed in the Browse column for that host; but if they are browse enabled, you will see an icon displayed in the Browse column, as seen in the image to the right.

How to browse hosts

FROM THE SEARCH WINDOW: Initiate a search like you normally do, wait for some results to be returned, then click any file name that has a browse host icon in its Browse column. Next, click the...

Browse Host button, which will become active on the toolbar located directly above the column headers, as seen here:

Once you click the Browse Host button...

If you choose to browse a host all the host's shared files will be displayed in the results window, the same as if you had done a regular search. The behavior is the same. Look at the Searches pane in the lower right corner, you will see that the host search has been added to the other search(es) you've already initiated. You may also select multiple hosts to browse.
An added benefit to this is, unlike the normal search where you specify file types to search for, Browse Host will search for and display all files and file types shared by that host.

Alternate methods of browsing a host's files:

Right-click the file name in the Search window, choose Browse Host from the drop-down menu. All the above behavior applies.

From the 'File' menu: (see below)

FROM THE DOWNLOADS WINDOW: Click any file name that you know is browse capable (see "To Know Which Hosts Are Browse Capable" at the top of this page), then right-click it and choose Browse Host from the menu. The appropriate behavior for the host's version of BearFlix as described above will apply.

From the 'File' menu: (see below)

 FROM THE FILE MENU:

First, you must determine the IP address and port number of the host you want to browse. For that you need to have the Host column activated in the window you are working from (right-click any column header, and click 'Host' from the menu).

In the Host column you will see IP addresses for each of the files in the list. A red IP address indicates the host is firewalled, and you may or may not be able to browse that host's files. Otherwise, you should be able to.
The port number will be '6346'.  If it is NOT, then the IP will be followed by a colon ( : ) and a number, which is the port number the host has chosen to use.

In the top left corner of BearFlix, click File, and then click Browse Hosts from the drop-down menu. This will bring up a small dialog where you need to enter the IP address and port number of the host. Then click OK.  The appropriate behavior for the host's version of BearFlix as described above will apply.

In all the above examples if you ever see the status of a host search say 'Failed' it means the host is either firewalled, not accepting connections, or the browse has timed out.

Allowing others to browse your files

Allowing others to browse your files is switched on by default when BearFlix is installed.  To switch this feature on or off, go to the Setup menu and then to the Uploads tab.  Under the Browse section you will see "Allow others to browse my files" to the right of a checkbox.

If you don't want others to see the files you are sharing, click in the box to uncheck it.  This will prevent others from browsing your shared files and the Browse Host icon will not appear with your IP address in searches. When you have made your selection, press OK.
